I have a RS1600i which at the moment is ok apart from when the engine is up to running temp. When dipping the clutch to change gear or coming to a junction and changing down, the revs drop off and the engine will stall. For example, I drove the car up the road yesterday and changed from 2nd to 3rd and left my foot on the clutch to see what happened and the revs died off completely and the engine stalled. The engine started again once i released the clutch (effectively jump starting a moving vehicle)........ Can anyone help with this problem or make some suggestions what might be wrong.

only when hot ???? - whats the read out on the temp gauge ???

how much fuel you got in the tank ??

does it stall in tops gears ???

me thinking fuel pressure >>>> - at the moment

Temp gauge is about half way. Does not seem to do it when cold but have not really driven car enough to say for sure. Tank is over half full with fresh petrol and car seems to tick over ok at approx 975rpm. Have not really experimented with the top gears too much but would not be suprised if it did the same thing when cold.... With regard to the fuelling, does not seem to misfire and has new fuel pump on car.................

Your temp gauge is sitting half way at normal running temperature??? Blimey, mine sits just over the white marker except when im sat in traffic, thats the only time she raises that high!

Mine was doing what you've described but when it was cold, not hot, was just my idle speed.

try taking the plugs out - see what colour they are 1st.

also - check that all the vacuum lines are conected,from the rocker cover - from the throttle body - from the plenium chamber - from the air flow meter area.

also - try just upping the idea slighty - see if that cure's the problem ???

Try cleaning the throttle housing with carb cleaner making shure the air filter is clean adjust idle screw so just to get it idling then have the Co checked and for any air leaks then adjust idle to suit, would'nt go looking for the complicated stuff just yet it's normally something simple
Where abouts are you by the way - somebody may be close to help.

Thanks Folks. Have spoke to another 16i Guru locally who said he is adamant the car just need setting up properly. He said much the same and said to make sure the right plugs are in it with right gap. Clean/Replace AIr Filter/Idle screw/Throttle Housing and adjust mixture etc.... I'll keep u posted.

Also, have problem when starting when hot but suspect it is just the starter motor. SOmeone else i know had a 16i that would only start from cold till he replaced the starter. Sound FAmiliar anyone ???

If it's slow and reluctant to turn over when cranking (hot) = Starter motor

Try replacing the fuel relay and checking your vacuum hoses. Get it set up and I'll betcha that solves it as it's exactly what mine did when I had it.

The hot starting problem could be the same issue that all Mk3 1600i escorts had, the alternator solenoid getting too hot and stops working. Once cooled down it starts working again.

Symtoms are:
When stationary for a long time and the engine gets warm enough for the fan to kick in, then you switch the car off and immediately try and re-start it, it either appears to have a dead battery or is very slow and sluggish turning over.

Good luck in sorting it out thou, just remember, we're all in the same boat and we all drive tempremental cars that often throw hissy fits!

Not every car will suffer with the problem Paul, but it is a known fault with the Mk3.

Get a series2 RST heat shield from fords to fit on yer starter stops them from getting TOOOO hot worked on mine A diesel starter motor out of an escort fits a lot more heavy duty than a std item
