Default PUma Cosworth - Whats it worth?

I've decided its time to sell on my cosworth 4x4 converted puma. To take it where i want to go I would have to spend silly money and still it wouldnt necessarily be my dream car so Ive decided its better to put my money into something else.

Now I'm in 2 minds, break it or sell as is.

I'd prefer to avoid breaking it due to the aggro and hassle that is but i wont let the car go complete for pennies....

At the moment its in storage so I'd get it insured for the road again, re-mot'd and taxed (albeit pointless soon) and get it back on the road to dust off the cobwebs.

YOu see soo many wildly differing prices on custom conversions like this, some going for peanuts and low spec, some going for silly money and anything inbetween.

So I'm after a bit of guidance.

Spec as follows:

Base car
1.7 Moondust Silver brand new ford body shell modified by DJM Motorsport to take cosworth 4x4 running gear.

Engine:
Cosworth YB 2.0,
T34 0.63 exhaust housing, 20psi boost,
-34 actuator,
BD15 inlet cam, Standard exhaust cam.
Peg locked cam pulleys
lightly ported and polished head,
isky double valve springs,
motorsport 200 block, coopers ring head gasket, 6 long studs.
pipercross induction kit,
3 bar map sensor,
3" exhaust,
grey injectors,
Bosch 044 uprated fuel pump and 4x4 fuel rail and pressure regulator.
RS500 sized custom intercooler,
alloy power steering and header tanks and aeroquip hoses throughout,
Silicone hoses,
group A coil and 071 spark plugs
colins uprated ignition leads
group A breather system,
P8 ecu with collins baby board with antilag
Alloy fuel tank
klinger inlet manifold gaskets
Approx 380bhp 380lbft -dyno'd in 2010

Suspension:
Polybushes TCA inner. Uprated rubber TCA outer. Polybush ARB
Gaz Coilovers
Alloy front strut brace

Brakes:
Front: 330mm discs,AP racing 4 pots
Rear: standard escos discs
Braided lines

Wheels:
18x8" Speedline alloys with toyo tyres

Bodywork:
S1600 wings, bumpers, splitter and spoiler.

Interior
Millenium puma leather interior - usual wear to drivers bolster. ford cd player, boost guage.

The car is generally in good nick with the odd nick, stone chip and scuff from daily use.

As with many cosworths, Ive spent a fair bit on keeping it going over the years.

Basic summary of bits done:
2009 new suspension front topmounts, cups and bearings and gaz coilovers
2010 Replacement standard gearbox and clutch
2010 Dyno'd and remapped 380/380. Replacement anti-lag/ISCV
2010 Rear brakes reconditioned, new rear discs and pads, new front pads.
2011 Top of the range alarm with GSM pager/tracker fitted by K&M acoustics
2011 New battery and battery cable to boot, new earth straps. New starter motor.
2011 new clutch cable
2012 cambelt change and tensioner, auxialliary beld changed, new water pump fitted.
2012 TCA ball joints replaced.
2012 backbox replaced with stainless box.
2013 Refurbed black camcover fitted with new gasket
2013 cam and crank oil seals replaced. new cambelt and tensioner.
2013 Speedline 18"x8" alloys fitted with new toyo's
2013 TCA inner and outer bushes replaced, uprated or Polybush including ARB
2013 fitted klinger inlet manifold gaskets.

Since 2009 the car has been serviced regularly by Escos expert Mark Barber (cossiecrazy) with oil changes every 6 months along with new plugs. Most major maintenance and repair work done by Mark Barber

MoT's and taxed until i took it off the road in sept 2013. Gets started and driven to stop bits siezing every month or so and keep it alive.

Total of just under 20000 miles since the car was built in 2003 of which Ive done 16k ish.

The last few are from ford fair 2013 and are pretty much as the car stands now.

The F2 spoiler, carbon bonnet and of course, the penguin will not be on the car when sold. (bonnet will be standard).

loads of routine and minor maintenance stuff not in the thread, just the main bits but you can look at the thread in my sig for all the nitty gritty.

Let me know what people think would be about right level for me to market it at.

Hard to say, it would cost atleast Ł20k to Ł30k probably more as a good paint job is Ł3k to build this yourself if you did the spannering but got DJM to convert it and then buy the bits second hand and that is assuming you know the engine is good. I do not know how much of a following the puma has as don't know my ford scene well enough. My 205 Cossie is very similar really and I know a similar one to mine changed hands around Ł25k but needed some money spending even though it had a Ł10k plus engine.

Will be interesting to see really. I paid under 8k for my pug but it was in dire need of money and I have easily spent Ł25k in the last 12 months and I will do another 10 I bet before I am happy with it.

It's worth what someone is willing to pay when you're selling it.
If it were mine I would start at Ł20K and see who's interested.
Realistically I would expect to price it around a comparable model by year so "average" Escort Cosworth money or top racing puma money?
It's a recognised firm that built it which really helps IMHO

The main issue is it's a toy, most people could end up spending that on a toy but in nibbles and mini bites not a chunk!
is it eligible for any motor sport race/rally I'd check that out to widen the audience?

Same old forum story here, I'd love it but atm I would have to sell one of my favorite cars to fund it which won't happen

Ive got well over Ł35k of receipts in the first place but you never get back what the mods cost.

Any more opinions are welcome!

Bare or rolling shell would be hard to shift i think and probably not worth that much, id say keep it whole and be patient on selling.....get it advertised and see how it goes and be patient.

I think its truly a great car but the market for non RS YB powered cars is so varied as the engine is where the money is, saw a near pristine capri running a YB fetch 8.5k only last week and S1 RST running a 380hp YB fetch 12k and my cousin who has a YB in his clio 172 got 7 grand, but a puma fan wanting the best he can get has to depend on how deep his pockets are, good luck with it warren

if I didn't have my cossie now and this was up for Ł15k I wouldn't even negotiate...I would have driven to him, given him the cash and driven away with it.

People around 35 to 40 maybe more grew up with the good days of max power before it went in to chav city, we had car and car conversions plus the hey day of rally cross and the release of the Cosworth so it means so much more than a list of parts. Bubble arches and an engine with the cool factor and something that would never normally be this quick is the stuff of our day dreams.

My 205 used to be on my wall as a poster next to H20 COS and now I own it. If someone offered me Ł30k today I would not part with it.

I'd say 8-10k - the market will be extremely limited.

Probably best to break it.

I'd say around the Ł10-12k mark based on other YB converted cars. They don't seem to be worth as much as a genuine Cossies.

Wasn't there a YB converted Puma on eBay not so long ago? Yellow one? Can't recall the price but it wasn't expensive.

EDIT: It was on here, too, unfinished for Ł7000. https://passionford.com/forum/cars-f...t-details.html

You can get a nice Saph 4x4 for 8k, which is the problem for this car.

That Mondeo is a superior car IMO, maybe 8k was optimistic from me.

I'd break it then.

See what i mean about price variation

To someone who wants it or appreciates it for what it is, its worth a fair chunk, otherwise people are just looking at the parts cost of the main cossie bits as its worth.

Might end up being forced to break

Thats the problem a lot of puma fans would love this car but probably can't afford it when you consider a standard puma is worth peanuts these days, even if you are looking towards FRP's which is a much fairer comparison, even a good FRP is only 8k ish at best.

For someone who wants a puma cosworth themselves, even at Ł20k its probably a bargain to them as you couldnt do it for that unless you were a good welder and did ALL the fab work yourself. Paying someone else to do the work and you quickly see how it all adds up.

I personally think the number of people who want a Puma Cosworth AND have 20k who won't want to spend it on a better car are low/nil.

Just break it.

If you do decide to break it please shoot me a pm about the brakes, I wonder if the calipers OR discs might get under my compomotive 16's as I think they have more room than most 16's. In theory we might be able to arrnage a deal where you put my std Cossies on the front to sell it still? I also have some brembos

you have been given some goods answers realy i was going to say you would struggle to get 10k from a average car fan because it a conversion car but like others say that 1 person wanting to build something like this will pay good money its all about how long are you willing to wait for that 1 person to come along and how much do you want to sell it for best of luck with the sale its a realy nice car

warren I would stake money you will be far, far better of breaking it, selling a car like that for say Ł15k is a very limited market, break that down into a lot of smaller less value parts will generate a big audience, your gonna loose a lot of cash either way but breaking will return biggest cash pot for sure imo.

It gets to the point where it might be better to just keep it, after all a Ł10k loan would cost you about Ł180 per month over 4 years so peanuts to keep you car and still buy another...then get yours in a magazine and tart it around the show scene next yr with a proper price and if someone wants it you get the good bucks, if not keep it until someone comes along.

All built up cars are worth far more in bits, been there, done that in the past. For the best return get your spanners out, lots of genuine buyers of good cosworth parts out there still

Id put it up bay and set reserve at 15 see what happens no takers break but i would love to see a breakdown by sombody that knows what parts go for because it cant be that much more once they engine box brakes ect gone?
