ive run spacers for yrs with no problems with my bearings
they only cause a problem when you go way over the correct et for your car, if you normally run an et of 35 for example or a wheel with hubcentric spacers to make 35 it makes no difference whatsoever

i fancy them just unsure of the fit. by spacing them out, will it not make them more likely to catch the arches.

no, if you use the correct spacers then the wheels will end up the same, as far as i can find out the standard sierra et is 40 so you may well get away with using smaller spacers
