They are bloody good engines as long as the timing belts are changed at the recommended 80k intervals. I had one with over 180k on the clock and no issues at all.
The taxi firm I use in Amsterdam has a 2.5 TDi Quattro with over 750,000KMS on the clock. It still looks and sounds like new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
